The Impact of Covid-19 to Healthcare Professionals
At the beginning of this year, we have faced one common enemy that has disrupted the life we are used to within a short span of time. Who would have thought that one microorganism could bring such an effect to our world? A lot has changed since the pandemic arrived. The life we lived months ago is gone, replaced by the “New Normal”.
A noticeable impact of this is the attention the world has given to our healthcare workers. We have come to notice their importance and how we relied on their help during this challenging time. People have even started referring to them as our “Modern Day Heroes”.
Profiling the Top Competency Among Healthcare Professionals
Having said that, we have also grown curious about the factors that make our Modern Day Superheroes so capable. What are the top key strengths of our healthcare professionals? What helps them maintain a highly effective health care support service for our nation?
Therefore, we have conducted a survey using the Talegent Competency-Based Assessment Tool. This is an online assessment tool that measures work-related competencies of individual professionals and helps predict human potential and behaviors in the workplace.
It can be used as an objective recruitment tool for hiring the best person for the right job. It also assesses the strengths and areas for development of employees, hence, it can also be used for developing a tailor-fit individual development or succession plans.
We assessed our healthcare professionals based on the 23 work-related competencies of Talegent, which helped us determine their top 5 competencies.
Method of Study
The survey gathered 5000+ healthcare workers ranging from entry to managerial levels. We have included medical, administrative and executive staff in the study. They came from different healthcare institutions here in the Philippines.
Based on our survey, the top 5 competencies of our healthcare workers are:

Top Competency #1 - Self-Insight
What this means:
Professionals with this competency tend to be insightful, and can recognize their own strengths and weaknesses. This can mean that they have an excellent sense of self. They have a clear idea of what their key expertise is and how they can apply it to specific situations.
They are also highly responsive to feedback. They are expected to thrive on new opportunities for learning and growth. Improving their skills and knowledge can be their priority to be able to help their patients better.
Top Competency #2 - Adherence
What this means:
Professionals that have this competency are best with rules, guidelines, and set procedures. They are highly inclined to show strong compliance, deliver promises, and produce error-free work.
Based on the results, our healthcare professionals tend to be strict in following safety protocols. This is a crucial part in their job, since other people’s lives are in their hands. Even a seemingly simple guidelines of properly wearing a mask actually saves a lot of lives during a pandemic. Their daily tasks are risky, and following protocols can make them more secure..
Top Competency #3 - Flexibility
What this means:
This competency describes our healthcare professionals as open individuals who are usually quick to adapt to new situations. It can be seen in their response to the COVID-19 situation. They quickly responded and adjusted their methods of treating people by separating the treatment facilities for COVID- and non-COVID related patients. They are also open to feedback that could help them improve their services.
Top Competency #4 - Implementation
What this means:
Our healthcare professionals can be described as reliable, detail-focused, and meticulous. They follow through on plans to ensure it is carried out accordingly.
Jobs are done with precision, and it can be seen even in simple acts such as prescribing the right doses of medicine to their patients.
Top Competency #5 - Resilience
What this means:
This indicates that healthcare workers can remain calm and optimistic even in stressful situations. They demonstrate strong self-belief and perseverance even when facing setbacks. They will most likely adjust rather than give up.
This might even be the competency that makes them superheroes. Imagine their everyday struggle in dealing with different patient’s concerns. Many individuals in their industry spend up to 24-hour shifts daily in the hospital and often see people suffering, but they still have admirable perseverance and composure when accomplishing their tasks. Their dedication to saving lives reflects the reason why Resilience is one of their top 5 competencies.
Now, we understand our healthcare professionals more. They display the appropriate competencies needed in keeping our citizens healthy, especially in light of this current pandemic.
