Career aspirations are largely dependent on motivations, which determine the pacing of one’s career growth. Every employer should value the aspirations of their workforce since this fuels them to perform. It is a priority for employees to find their own voice in your organization and use your voice to empower them. 



Here are 5 questions that will help you gain insights into your employee's career drivers and goals:



1. CURRENT ROLE

  • What energizes you and/or demotivates you about your work?
  • How do you address those issues?


2. WHO YOU WORK WITH

  • How do you contribute to the team’s overall performance?
  • What are areas that you think you and your co-workers could improve on to work more effectively as a team and why? 


3. SHORT-TERM GOALS

  • What would you say is the most significant contribution you have made in your current role?
  • What do you want to achieve in your career over the next year?
  • Why is this important to you?


4. LONG-TERM GOALS

  • What is your long-term professional goal?
  • Describe the steps you’ve already taken to reach it.
  • Discuss how this role or company helps you achieve your long-term goal.


5. YOUR ORGANIZATION

If you were asked by someone outside your organization about the vision of the company and how well it is fulfilling that vision, what would you say and why? Any personal benefits that you find worthwhile - think about career, job satisfaction, and professional opportunities rather than financial and similar benefits, and why do you say that?
